  • WHAT IS DOLBY ATMOS?

  • HOW IT WORKS:

BUILDING A NEW SONIC REALITY WITH ONKYO AND DOLBY ATMOS

    The Audio Bed

The Audio Bed is made up of standard surround sound configuration.

Traditional channel-based audio contains static elements such as bass and other sonic textures. This audio forms the “bed” upon which directional and localized sounds are built.

    Sound Objects

In-ceiling speakers or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers.

“Object-oriented” sounds can be localized in a specific speaker or panned around and above you in a multidimensional sound field.

    Dolby Atmos

The Audio Bed AND Sound Objects

Together, the audio bed and mixed object-oriented effects convincingly simulate the sounds you might hear if you were in the film, not merely observing it.

Effects move around the room just as they would in real life.

  • TRANSFORMING HOME THEATER WITH DOLBY ATMOS

    What is Dolby Atmos®?

With Dolby Atmos®, sound comes alive from all directions, including overhead. The format combines a channel-based audio bed with object-oriented sound to place and move specific effects around the theater, creating a breathtakingly realistic and captivating sonic atmosphere.

Sound designers and artists are free to mix in a 3D space, steering effects through surround channels and adding a seamless overhead dimension with discrete height channels. In commercial theaters, it supports up to 128 audio tracks and 64 unique speaker feeds. The home theater adaptation automatically scales to your surround configuration.  Onkyo receivers support any layout up to 11 channels.

Additionally, a new Dolby surround up-mixer allows for your current channel-based content (that has not been mixed for Dolby Atmos) to be expanded to fill the flexible speaker layouts of a Dolby Atmos system.

  • NEW DOLBY SURROUND  UPMIXER

If you invest in building a Dolby Atmos home theater, you want to get full use of it, even if the content you’re playing isn’t mixed in Dolby Atmos. That’s where the new Dolby surround upmixer comes in.

When you enable it for non-Atmos multi-channel content, the Dolby surround upmixer expands the audio so that it takes advantage of your entire system, including the ceiling or Dolby Atmos enabled speakers while still honoring and maintaining the artist’s intent for the mix. Dolby surround upmixer replaces the Dolby Pro Logic II family of upmixers, offering greater flexibility and superior audio performance.

Unlike previous wideband upmixing technologies, the Dolby surround upmixer operates on multiple perceptually spaced frequency bands for a fine-grained analysis of the source signal. Dolby surround upmixer can individually steer frequency bands, producing surround sound with precisely located audio elements and a spacious ambience. The Dolby surround upmixer will provide audio to the same set Dolby Atmos enabled or ceiling speakers configured in your system.

  • DOLBY ATMOS & ONKYO FAQS

What Onkyo models are Dolby Atmos compatible?

In 2017, Onkyo has debuted the SBT-A500 Surround Sound Bar System.

    2016 models include the TX-NR555, TX-NR656, TX-NR757, TX-RZ610, TX-RZ710, TX-RZ810, TX-RZ1100, TX-RZ3100 and the PR-RZ5100 pre-processor as well as the HT-S7800 home theater system.

    2015 models included the TX-SR444, TX-NR545, TX-646, TX-NR747, TX-RZ800 and TX-RZ900 A/V receivers along with the HT-S5800 home theater system.

    2014 models included the TX-NR636, TX-NR737, TX-NR838, TX-NR1030, TX-NR3030 and PR-SC5530 along with the HT-S7700 and HT-S9700THX home theater systems.

Dolby Atmos firmware is not intended for any A/V receivers manufactured prior to 2014.

    What speakers can I use?

There are a number of ways to adapt your home theater for Dolby Atmos. Regular in-ceiling speakers can be connected to your receiver’s height channels. You can also purchase Dolby Atmos-enabled front speakers or add-on front speaker modules, which feature an upward-firing transducer that bounces discrete height effects from your ceiling.

    Ceiling speakers or Atmos-enabled speakers?

There are some rooms in which we don’t recommend using ceiling speakers. If your ceiling is low or you have to mount your loudspeakers on overhead trusses or brackets, the overhead speakers will be closer to the listening position. The audio may be distracting because you’ll hear exactly which speaker is producing the sound instead of feeling immersed in an atmosphere in which sounds occur naturally overhead.

In this environment, Dolby Atmos enabled speakers may better reproduce the Dolby Atmos sound you would hear in a movie theatre, where the overhead speakers are high in the auditorium, creating a more diffuse experience.

Audio experts who have heard Dolby Atmos enabled speakers agree that in certain rooms, the sound these speakers produce can be preferable to the sound that ceiling speakers produce.

Will Dolby Atmos enabled speakers work in my room?

Dolby Atmos enabled speakers can produce an incredibly accurate Dolby Atmos experience in many kinds of rooms. You’ll get the best sound if your ceiling is flat (not vaulted or angled) and made of an acoustically reflective material, such as drywall, plaster, concrete, or wood.

While Dolby designed the technology for rooms with ceiling heights of 8 to 9 feet (2.4 to 2.7 meters), testing indicates that you can still hear incredible Dolby Atmos sound in rooms with ceilings as high as 14 feet (4.3 meters), though the effect may become more diffuse in rooms with higher ceilings.

Recessed lighting fixtures, chandeliers, crown molding, and heating or air conditioning vents in your ceiling do not noticeably interfere with the Dolby Atmos experience.

How can I get overhead sound if I don’t mount speakers in my ceiling?

Use speakers equipped with Dolby Atmos enabled technology.

Through knowledge of psychoacoustics and sound physics, Dolby developed speakers that can create overhead sound even though they’re only a few feet off the floor. These speakers fire sound upward, where it reflects off the ceiling to produce an incredibly lifelike recreation of overhead sound—you really have to hear them to believe them.

You will be able buy integrated Dolby Atmos enabled speakers that include both traditional forward-firing speakers and upward-firing speakers in one speaker cabinet. (Those speakers have two sets of posts, one for the traditional speaker and one for the upward-firing Dolby Atmos enabled speaker.)

But if you already have conventional speakers you like, you can simply buy Dolby Atmos enabled add-on speaker modules. These include only the upward-firing speakers. You can put the add-on modules on top of your current speakers or on another nearby surface.

How will I be able to get Dolby Atmos content?

You will be able to play Dolby Atmos content at home in two ways:
    • On Blu-ray Discs, through a Blu-ray Disc player or compatible game console set to bitstream output.
    • As streaming content, through a connected streaming player set to bitstream output.

Should I buy Dolby Atmos content even if I don’t have new equipment?

The Dolby Atmos format was designed to be backward compatible, so it will play on both new and existing hardware platforms. With this in mind, you should purchase the Dolby Atmos® version of content (i.e.: movies, games, etc.) whenever that is available.

If you upgrade your equipment in the future to Dolby Atmos-capable products, this will unlock the ultimate experience from Dolby Atmos content. In the meantime, you will still experience great surround from Dolby Atmos content through traditional channel-based systems.

What’s difference between Dolby Atmos in the cinema and in the home?

The cinema, with its giant screen and massive sound system, will always be the reference for the ultimate entertainment experience. While home theaters have fewer speakers, the Dolby Atmos home experience is extremely powerful. It combines traditional home theater speaker layouts with either ceiling-mounted speakers or new Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers to create a plane of sound above the listener. The impact of either in-ceiling or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers is breathtaking. Your room fills with realistic, multidimensional sound that places you directly in the center of the entertainment experience.

What is the smallest setup that Dolby recommends? What is the largest?

Because audio that originates from overhead is a key contributor to the Dolby Atmos experience, Dolby recommends using at least two speakers to generate overhead audio elements. This gives the minimal ability to move audio from left to right above the listener. The addition of four or more speakers to generate overhead audio elements provides the ability to move audio left to right and front to back above the listener. This provides greater precision to the Dolby Atmos experience.

For high-end home theaters, a 7.1.4 system (a traditional 7.1-channel-based layout with four overhead or Dolby Atmos enabled speakers) will provide a great listening experience.

However, Dolby Atmos content is not tied to any specific playback configuration.Whether you have a full 7.1.4 system or a 5.1.2 system, your receiver will get the same content and play it back in a way that takes full advantage of your specific setup.

Who is creating content, such as movies, for Dolby Atmos in the home?

Globally, more than 100 cinema blockbusters have been released featuring Dolby Atmos soundtracks in the past two years, and many more are on the way. Major Hollywood studios are partnering with Dolby to create home video versions of both current box office releases and previously released favorites for release in 2014.

In addition to global studio partnerships, Dolby is partnering with game and music content creators to develop Dolby Atmos technology for future home theater use.

Where can I find a list of Dolby Atmos movies?

To learn more about this game-changing format, and to see a list of movies mixed in Dolby Atmos, please visit the Dolby website.

How will I get Dolby Atmos movies?

The same ways you get movies now: on Blu-ray Disc or through streaming video services. Dolby invented new scalable algorithms and extensions to Dolby TrueHD, their Blu-ray format, and Dolby Digital Plus, which is used by leading streaming video providers. Both formats now support Dolby Atmos sound, meaning that you’ll be able to play Dolby Atmos movies from your Blu-ray player or through your digital media adapter.

Is my older model Onkyo A/V receiver compatible with Dolby Atmos?

While the format is backward compatible, and therefore playable on legacy A/V receivers, you’ll need an A/V receiver with a Dolby Atmos DSP engine to experience the full multidimensional effects. Onkyo 2014 high-end A/V receivers, controllers, and HTiB packages were the first products in our line to feature Dual DSP Engines delivering the complete Dolby Atmos® effect.

  • TRANSFORMING HOME ENTERTAINMENT

The introduction of Dolby Atmos is the biggest development to hit home theater since surround-sound formats were first launched in the 1980s. Originally developed for commercial cinemas only a few years ago, the format required a complete retooling of the ecosystem from content capture to studio mixing to playback. Now there are over 100 blockbuster Dolby Atmos titles already screening in multiplexes around the world, and for the first time you can now experience the magic of this revolutionary new format in the comfort of your own home.

Onkyo high-current amplification technology and Dolby Atmos are ready to bring powerful multidimensional surround-sound experience to your home listening space.
